National Benchmark Tests (NBTs) – Free Practice

May 26, 2017 By Andrew

PRACTICE NATIONAL BENCHMARK TEST FOR FREE.

[su_button url=”[su_button url=”http://learn.olico.org/course/view.php?id=181″ target=”blank” style=”flat” background=”#2a587a” size=”6″ center=”yes”]Click to sign up and prepare for NBTs[/su_button]

After more than a year’s development, OLICO is thrilled to publish a free and extensive resource for SA learners writing the university National Benchmark Tests.

Our NBT preparation WORKBOOK and ONLINE PRACTICE is FREE to access on our maths site: http://learn.olico.org/ This project is designed to assist learners preparing for the MAT Test.

The NBTs are written by matrics and used by universities in various ways with some using them as additional entrance requirements and others using them to identify the required extended support services for new students. While the MAT Test questions are on similar topic areas to the school curriculum, the way the questions are asked prioritises a problem-solving and sense-making approach to mathematics which adds a level of complexity not often experienced by learners. Learners who are inclined towards a “procedure-heavy” or “rote-learning” understanding of mathematics will find the NBTs a real challenge.

Until now, NBT preparation has only been available as a paid service. It is hoped that this contribution to the commons will benefit learners across the schooling system and reduce barriers, in particular, for learners from disadvantaged communities. This NBT content has been extensively peer-reviewed and we’re confident it is a top-quality offering.

Ultimately, the best way to adequately prepare for the MAT NBT is to start in Grade 10 with a dedicated problem-solving approach to mathematics. To this extent, the first section of the freely downloadable workbook is broken into topic and grade-level areas. We hope this will be useful for both teachers and tutors in working with their learners. The second section contains two full mock NBT MAT papers to provide learners with an idea of the kind of questions asked in these tests.

Finally, we’re extremely grateful to IkamvaYouth SA and the Learning Trust for their contributions in making this a reality.

Good luck to all the learners writing NBTs in the upcoming month. We trust you will find this extremely useful.

Onwards and upwards.

OLICO’s FREE online maths for Grades 7, 8 and 9

November 28, 2016 By Andrew

maths practice for grade 7 8 9 south africa

OLICO is thrilled to announce the launch of our GRADE 7, 8 AND 9 ONLINE MATHS PROGRAM which is now officially open to the public.

REGISTER FOR FREE: LEARN.OLICO.ORG

.

OLICO’s online maths tool has been in development for nearly 5 years and contains over 20 000 unique interactive maths questions and 330 tutorial videos. This maths content is aligned to the South African CAPS-curriculum and rooted in the South African context.

Developed by Dr Lynn Bowie and a team of experienced education specialists, OLICO’s online maths tool is a useful supplement to learners, teachers, tutors or parents tackling grade 7, 8 and 9 mathematics. Says Lynn, “In grades 7 to 9 learners need to make the crucial transition from working with number and shape to laying the foundations of algebra and geometry. For many learners, the time and support available in school hours will simply not be sufficient to do this so OLICO’s online offering is one way in which we can supplement the work of the teacher.”

OLICO is calling on schools, teachers, after-school centres and NGOs who are interested in collaborating on this project to make contact. A core desire of OLICO is to develop and support a resource that is useful for teaching both in the classroom and in an after-school environment.

Grade 9 ANA Revision

August 8, 2014 By Andrew

On 19 September all the Grade 9s in the country will write a mathematics test (the Annual National Assessment, also known as the ANAs). The test is used by the Department of Basic Education to evaluate progress. At OLICO Youth we think that the ANAs provide our learners with an important opportunity to revise all their mathematics work from the year and to get feedback on their progress.

We invited all grade 9 OLICO learners to be part of a Grade 9 ANA revision programme at OLICO’s Diepsloot branch. The learners who chose to be part of the programme have committed to do the following each week:

  • Complete a homework sheet with about 10 questions from previous ANA papers on a particular topic during the week at home.
  • Attend a 1 hour class on a Friday afternoon at OLICO where we will go over the questions from the homework sheet and deal with any problems that arise

Topic/area to be covered in OLICO Youth revision programme
Week 1: 4 Aug Whole numbers, integers, exponents
Week 2: 11 Aug Common fractions and decimals fractions
Week 3: 18 Aug Algebraic expressions and equations
Week 4: 24 Aug Geometry of straight lines, 2-D shapes, congruency, pythag, area, perimeter
Week 5: 1 Sept Patterns, functions, relationships and graphs
Week 6: 8 Sept A trial ANA exam covering all topics

You can find revision worksheets and memos here:
